Turning the Corner: A Milestone Month

0
It is funny how a small change to your daily rhythm can quietly snowball into something massive. A little over a month ago, I set myself a simple target: hit 10,000 steps every single day, no excuses.

Today marks day 34 of keeping that streak alive, and looking back at the final data for May, the numbers have genuinely taken me by surprise.

If you look at the chart from my Garmin watch, May stands out like a mountain on the right side of the graph.

The May Breakdown

  • The Final Tally: I finished the month with a massive 410,717 steps logged in May alone, officially making it my highest volume month of the last year.
  • Creeping Up the Average: That push has dragged my overall daily average up to 9,671 steps.
  • The Real-World Result: Aside from the data, the biggest shift is on the scales, having dropped around 1 stone in weight since turning this focus on.

Finding the Rhythm

Most of these miles have been clocked up right on my doorstep, looping up towards Cleator Moor, and back down via the local lanes and trails. What started as a deliberate effort to hit a number has simply become a default setting.

Lately, the routine has even evolved into a short morning jog when the West Cumbria weather behaves itself, which has been a fantastic way to wake up the legs.

The best part of the whole routine has undoubtedly been the company. Bella, my young working Cocker Spaniel, has been out there for every single mile. Whether we are doing a brisk 2.5-mile loop or just a shorter recovery walk to shake off the stiffness, she is always raring to go.

What's Next?

Hitting 34 days straight means the initial struggle of establishing the habit is over - it actually starts to feel a bit scary how automatic it becomes when it just becomes part of your day.

The next big milestone in the crosshairs is the 60-day mark. June is already underway with 6,695 steps banked so far today, and the plan is simple: keep putting one foot in front of the other, keep the streak alive, and see how far this consistency can take me.
