Out with the Old: Our 15-Year Kitchen Transformation

0
They say the kitchen is the heart of the home, but after fifteen years of heavy service, ours was feeling less like a heart and more like a time capsule that had well and truly run its course. It was tired, dated, and hiding a few silent hazards behind the scenes - including a deeply alarming scorched cabinet side next to the old cooker that we only discovered during the rip-out. Talk about a wake-up call.

We knew it was time for a complete overhaul, and after a lot of planning, design sessions, and living out of cardboard boxes, the transformation is finally complete. To say we are over the moon with the outcome is an understatement.

Brave Colour Choices and a Premium Feel

When it came to the aesthetics, we wanted to step away from the standard, safe options like gloss white or grey and go for something with real character. We opted for a top-tier range of matte jade green cabinets, paired with light, washed-wood worktops and matching splashbacks.

It felt like a bold decision on paper, but seeing the protective film come off the doors was an absolute game-changer. The matte green has an incredibly calming, high-end feel that reacts beautifully with the new spotlights. To tie the whole room together, we chose sleek, sweeping black handles, a black swan-neck tap, and a generous black glass splashback behind the hob.

Balancing the White Goods

One of the biggest functional headaches of the old galley layout was the positioning of the appliances. It always felt a bit disjointed and cluttered.

During the design phase, we made the executive decision to completely rethink the layout of our white goods. We moved the washing machine to a brand-new location, sitting it directly alongside the tumble dryer under the long run of washed-wood worktop.

This simple shift has worked wonders for the room. It gives the space a much more balanced, intentional look, keeping the heavy appliances neatly zoned together and freeing up valuable workspace elsewhere.

The Ultimate Appliance Tower

The absolute crowning glory of the new kitchen is the integrated appliance tower. We went for a high-spec Haier double oven with a matching integrated microwave mounted perfectly flush right above it. To top it off, these appliances come with a 10 year guarantee. Winner Winner. Chicken Dinner.

Sitting nestled inside the jade cabinetry, this vertical column of seamless black glass looks incredibly sharp. Beyond the looks, having the double oven built in at eye level is a massive win for daily use - no more bending down to check on dinner, and with modern fan systems, we can finally say goodbye to the unpredictable "hot spots" of our old cooker.

The Final Verdict

Now that the tools are packed away, the electricians have finished the final live-testing, and the plinths are down, the kitchen feels twice the size it used to be. It is bright, solid, safe, and beautifully engineered.

After a steady diet of microwave meals and air-fryer chips over the last couple of weeks, we can't wait to finally fire up the new Haier ovens and cook a proper, decent home-cooked meal.
