Fat Lad Weight Loss: How a Spaniel and 1,800 Calories Flipped the Script

0
Let’s be honest, reversing a fitness trend line is hard work. For about ten months, my Garmin weight graph was doing a magnificent impression of a steady, unbothered uphill climb. It peaked back in March at a robust 14 stone 14 lbs, with a BMI that was politely entering the "right, let’s sort this out" territory.
Fast forward just over two months, and that same line hasn’t just drifted down, it has absolutely plummeted.

I’m currently sitting at 14 stone 2 lbs. That is a full 12 pounds dropped since the March peak, and the 13-stone bracket is well and truly in my sights. Here is exactly how it’s happening, the numbers behind it, and why my dog is entirely to blame.

The Recipe: 1,800 Calories and a Relentless Streak

There are no fad diets or weird wellness shakes here. The strategy has been simple, mathematical, and occasionally testing:
  • The Intake: Restricting calories to around 1,800 per day.
  • The Output: Maintaining a massive goal streak of hitting over 10,000 steps a day.
Balancing an 1,800-calorie limit with a demanding shift-work schedule means there are days where it feels like proper, heavy lifting. Working irregular hours throws a massive spanner into the works for sleep and energy, but pushing through the fatigue to keep that daily step streak alive has been the ultimate secret weapon.

The Four-Legged Personal Trainer

While the calorie counting requires willpower, the step count is non-negotiable thanks to Bella.

If you want to ensure you never skip a walk, get a high-energy working breed. She doesn't care about my shift patterns, the West Cumbrian weather, or whether I’ve had a tough day. She just knows that the universe dictates at least four distinct outings a day.

Because of her routine, my recent weekly report showed an average of 14,926 steps a day and over 21 miles logged on the tracker. And here is the real kicker: because dogs don't walk in a straight line, they cover about double the distance of the person on the other end of the lead.

While my Garmin says we did a crisp 2.5-mile loop around Copeland yesterday afternoon, Bella easily clocked closer to 5 miles of pure, joyful sprinting and sniffing. I stay fit because she leaves me with absolutely no alternative.

The Hard Work is Paying Off

The data doesn't lie. My resting heart rate is sitting at a cool, calm 47 bpm, which means the cardiovascular engine is running efficiently despite the physical strain and irregular sleep patterns.

Dropping nearly a stone in a couple of months while managing a changing schedule is a massive reminder that consistency beats intensity every single time. It’s a bit of a slog at times, but seeing that trend line collapse on the chart makes every missed biscuit entirely worth it.

Two more days to match my all-time longest goal streak of 25 days. Watch this space.
