If you’ve spent more than five minutes in crypto, you’ve probably heard people waxing lyrical about "Altcoin Season" (or just "Altseason"). In short, it’s that chaotic, wildly lucrative stretch of time when almost every cryptocurrency that isn't Bitcoin goes on a massive run.
Normally, Bitcoin is the undisputed big boss of the market. It holds the lion's share of total market capitalisation, and where BTC goes, the rest usually follow. But during an Altseason, that hierarchy flips on its head.
Here is how the madness usually unfolds:
- Bitcoin takes a breather: After a big rally, Bitcoin’s price starts moving sideways and settling down.
- Capital rotates: Traders sitting on juicy BTC gains start taking profits and plumping them into smaller, riskier assets to chase even bigger percentage gains.
- The domino effect: Cash trickles down from major coins like Ethereum and Solana into mid-cap tokens, and eventually into speculative micro-caps (and yes, a whole heap of memecoins).
- Mass FOMO: Obscure tokens pop up 500% in a fortnight, social feeds go mad, and every punter feels like a financial genius.
- Below 25: Full-on Bitcoin Season (BTC is outperforming almost everything).
- 25 to 75: A neutral, middle-of-the-road market where neither side dominates.
- Above 75: Official Altcoin Season - time to pop the champagne!
It’s easily the most thrilling part of the crypto cycle, but it cuts both ways. What shoots up overnight can drop just as quickly once the party winds down and capital rotates back to safety!
